Pride is one reason. Another is that this site is intended to inform people. Therefore, when one of us posts an answer, we are trying to share our knowledge with others. People usually don't like being told that they are wrong. So, they don't like getting bad ratings.

It's not so much that they are worried or mad. It's that they have put a lot of effort into providing correct answers to factual questions and hopefully useful answers to requests for opinions or advice. Trivially or maliciously rating those answers down is a form of vandalism. If someone throws a rock at your window and breaks it, you would feel the same sense of frustration that AB users experience when good answers are sabotaged by other users who are using the site to relieve boredom or to flamebait.
