Yes. A songbird. It was perched on the top of a tall tree, not close. Not much more than a speck against the sky. I was showing off how accurate my rifle was; with a quite strong crosswind and at that angle the shot looked pretty impossible. Taking the wind and the angle from perpendicular into account, I aimed at a point a little above and to the left of the target. At least I should put a bullet close by that bird, and startle it, make it fly away, I thought. The speed of sound being what it is, and the velocity of the bullet being what it was, I guess that bird never heard the shot. It exploded in a cloud of feathers. Its body came tumbling to the ground, striking branches on the way down. The onlookers were impressed, with my flukey marksmanship, and perhaps with my macho callousness. For myself, I wished I'd never even thought of aiming a rifle at that inoffensive bird.
