It did at first, but now I wonder how much of it is bad grammer and how much is "text speak" or things lost in translation from other languages. There are people all over the world on AB, and we can't expect them all to use "perfect" english.
-
No, because how do you know they are not dyslexic or have learning difficulties? As long as I can tell what they mean then I don't care, I'm not a grammar or spelling snob :D
-
I annoys me very much. However, if it seems as though the person asking the question is not able to use proper spelling and grammar (i.e. when english is not their first language), then I usually look past it and treat it like any properly asked question. On the other hand, if the question is typed in a way that I know the asker CHOSE to use improper spelling and grammar (i.e. alternating caps & lower case, "chat speak", etc), then I refuse to answer. I will not waste my time answering a question if they could not be bothered to ask it correctly in the first place.
-
No, no offense to the people who don't know how to spell...It's the people who are in such a rush to recieve an answer that they don't take time to ask the question..I'm not bothered though...just asking how y'all feel 'bout that
-
It doesn't really bother me... But when a person likes 2 talk lyke dis n den he likes 2 TALK LIKE THIS!???? thats when I tend to get annoyed. They aren't text messaging the question to AB on their phones are they? People who aren't native english speakers are fine though. Most of the time you can tell the difference between someone who is being lazy or stupid and someone who doesn't speak english.
-
Provided its actually a question (as opposed to a statement) and I can decipher what they're asking, I don't mind giving it a crack. I tend to overlook the odd bit of text language, although it does annoy me when the whole thing is written in "gangsta speak" . The main thing that turns me off is people who write ALL IN CAPS, repeat their question in slightly different wording or add too many question marks????!!! It seems to me like they're trying to draw attention to their question too much, and that puts me right off.
-
I usually give it a bad answer but not on answerbag. I have more respect for this site then to give a bad answer. I really enjoy this site even with those people because those answers will probably be deleted. It used to annoy me very much though. By the way, I lke tat questin vry moch (I hope you know that I am kidding).
-
Especially when they don't put apostrophes in the right place.
-
Definately. I know I'm not perfect, but I put forth effort. When I see poor grammar and punctuation it makes me feel like the person on the other end is lazy. Unfortunately, that's the truth of the situation.
-
No, 1st of all, not everyone has the same level of education, either in school, or life. 2nd, not every one is in the same age range so you have old folks like me who had what is comprable to an 8th grade education now a days when we graduated. 3rd, MY GRAMMAR abd SPELLING both SUCK!
-
my grammar is a lovely old lady
-
Yes, but don't dwell on it. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff:-)
-
nope not at all! :)
-
I don't get really angry; life's too short. Certainly, we all have typos here and there. When I see someone who clearly doesn't understand grammar well, it makes me sad. I wish they'd read more. It's when I see questions and answers written in that lazy, ridiculous computer shorthand that I get irritated. Take the extra .07 seconds and type correctly. We'll wait.
-
Not really
-
Not really, aslong as it is a simple mistake (a double ll instead of a single l for example) and not a complete load of crap that is incomprehensible! This is not an exam but an online message board. As long as the question/answer/comment is easily readable then I am ok with it.
-
Yep. It shouldn't, but it does. I also hate text speak (C U L8R). Drives me mad.....
-
I don't know. How much does it bother YOU? ; )
-
No, but the amount of the mistakes surprises me. But, since I've gotten older, I find I'm forgetting more and more. So, if ABers can put up with mine, I can put up with theirs.
-
Yes, but not as much as it used to. I don't like when people mispell a word on purpose.
-
When it is done on purpose, or it is a glaring error, it is a little annoying, but I just try and ignore them. Typos (and really difficult words) are different, most people are subject to them once in a while.
-
It depends on the situation. Just *how* bad is the spelling/grammar? Is the person typing a native speaker of English? If a question is peppered with things like "lolz" I tend not to bother. Typos are forgivable, but not when they're obviously a habit. It's usually evident when someone is making a serious effort, and those I let slide. I don't trash people for poor English skills, but I do tend to pass the question by.
-
Yes. Why don't people read what they've written, exactly how it sounds? Then, they might be able to correct a lot of it, (if they learnt anything in school.)
-
I really don't sweat the small stuff, as long as I can read it!
-
Yes, especially when they can take 5 seconds and just check their answers/questions. It shows a lack of manners +/or education.
-
Yes, especially if it's the same person and they do it all the time. I don't know why it bugs me, it just does. There's one cat that continues to say "an" when he means to say "and". Drives me crazeh!
-
Yes.
-
Yes. I'm not too fond of the cutesy way of writing (n e way for anyway... its just annoying!)
-
Yeah, it does. I mean, I make mistakes sometimes, but for the most part, I like my answers to be taken seriously, so I take time to make sure they are spelled right. And theres an edit button for a reason... ~+~
-
Yes. I am from a generation before text messaging. I think that kids today really have their spelling and grammar affected by "text speak"
-
Yes because it often makes it difficult (if not impossible) to understand what they are attempting to communicate. By being preoccupied with texting hieroglyphics they end up with a string of gibberish that doesn't invite input from others.
-
I normally tolerate it. My 2 cents.
-
No, honestly I am not bothered with it at all. I am here to help if I can with the question asked, not the way they decide to write it. If I can not understand it I would have never open it up.
-
Yes. I try to be very articulate. If you see my answers and it is spelled wrong, it was a mistake. One user says "are" instead of "or" How confusing is that?
-
I think I love you.
-
You've noticed too, huh?
-
Coz I ain't here to please you!
-
There's no spell-check. Holla!
-
They dont care about their spelling they just want an answer. They are text talkers They arent as educated as you They come from different countries, so translating is difficult The have medical conditions preventing correct spelling, dyslexic maybe.
-
Everyone has a different education history. Some have mastered English when they were in school, beginning with grade school. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and grammar may not be one of their strengths. But, they have the ability to at least write and get their point across, and most of the time we understand what they are saying in their writing. Not a problem, here. I'm thankful that I am able to form a proper sentence and that most of the time my spelling is correct. If I make a mistake, so what. You know, some of these people without proper or correct grammar are actually helping people on this site. They are helping people understand what is going on in their lives, and that's what is important.
-
Because most of the people who use and enjoy this site are just normal human beings with normal human tendencies to make small insignificant errors. And, when you consider that many people who use this site are from many different nations (world wide web) where English is not their first language; some errors will occur from time to time. In other words GET OVER IT, AND YOURSELF.
-
Alas, it's bad everywhere.
-
A few reasons, I think - 1. Good grammar and spelling are not as required as they have been in the past, despite their being essential for good communication. Witness the rise of the babble known as "text speak." 2. There is no spell checker here automatically applied to answers. One can add such a thing, but most users don't. 3. People don't bother to take the time to proofread their material. Which is the most prevalent reason? 3, in my opinion.
-
Why don't you just say "Why don't people use proper grammar when asking questions."
