  • In my experience, free stuff only *appears* to be free. Looking back at a few things I've received, I had to give up either time (attending a 'conference' or 'dinner') or give up my personal information and privacy. They collect your name, address, and your email address. Suddenly you get spam from all directions. Your personal info has been sold from one company to another, and another, and another. For me it's not worth the wasted time or the hassle.  
  • Craigslist has a free section, but it is often spammed. Still, I got a decent 20" CRT monitor for free so it's not all bad. Freecycle and Kashless are decent as well.
