From Wikipedia: "The term jacket is reserved for a hip-length or shorter garment, while coat can be used for a garment of any length." "It is very similar to a coat, and in some instances either term can be used for the same article; but a jacket is generally shorter, ending just below the waist, and often lighter." But I'm sure that you can use either one and still get the same meaning across.

I usually consider a coat to be something heavier. When I think of a jacket, it's lighter weight.

In general usage, a jacket is shorter than a coat. I have seen a change in this usage over the years, where a coat is described as a short or a full length covering over clothing, and a jacket specifically applied to suits, although suits also can have sports coats or sports jackets. The names are now very similar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_(clothing) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacket
