  • This is not an effect of "hypnosis," but learning. State dependent learning is a phenomena in which we learn to perform in a certain way within a certain environment, such as while music is playing. Perhaps that day you really pushed yourself for the first time was when you were listening to that particular music. In fact, I find it easier to run faster and longer while staring at a certain part of the wall which allows me to concentrate on my breathing better than watching the mounted T.V. I would suggest rewarding yourself for each successive interval that you are able to reach. For instance, drink less water during your workout, and if you can usually run 2 miles without stopping, run 2.1 or 2.25 miles without stopping and reward yourself with that deprived water. It sounds simplistic, but I assure you, it works. Also, FYI, hypnosis is a suggestive state of reasoning in which one must sincerely believe that the state is attainable before being capable of hypnosis. -B.S. Psychology & Sociology magna cum laude
