Glad I didn't buy one. Seriously, people who spend all their money on the latest technological goods designed solely for their supposed personal pleasure need to get a life (one which isn't entirely disposable).

Well, one of the two competing formats had to go, either HD-DVD or Blu-ray. It's a shame that it took so long for one of them to be dropped, but blame that on the companies that promoted the two formats. What the consumers didn't need was yet another format war.

As to how I feel? I am pleased that it was HD-DVD that failed. Blu-ray is a superior format, in that it provides more storage space now and in the future. This makes uncompressed multi-channel audio possible and reduces the amount of video compression, to the benefit of all our ears and eyes.

Now if they could only get reliable HDMI 1.3 hardware into the market, along with the chipsets to handle uncompressed audio. All of the home theatre receivers and decoders now on the market are obsolete until the new audio chipsets arrive in number - and quality.

All that said, there is no guarantee that Blu-ray will prosper. The software is expensive and all the features offered aren't available in the existing players (e.g., Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD). Until that happens, Blu-ray will not be able to deliver on its promises.

This from the same company that mishandled SACD. I have little faith in Sony these days.

I think it kinda sucks but we have known for a while now so it's not such a shock. We bought ours at Best Buy and have a buy back option. Plus they are sending their customers who bought a Toshiba player a $50 store card. All together we will get about $135 for the player and 15 HD DVD's. Still isn't near what we invested in the collection but we knew we were taking a gamble when we bought it.
