Is there a definitive day as the first day of the week? There seems to be no consensus that I have seen.

Monday. And no it isn't bloody Sunday or any other strangeness, before the oddballs (and yes that means you killdrphill among others) come out and claim it is. That's the first day of the working week for most people and it's the first day of the week, not sunday, thursday or any other day.

Most calendars start on Sunday. My employer pays us on a work week that starts Sunday also. So Sunday is the first day of the week in my opinion.

It is common Jewish and Christian practice to regard Sunday as the first day of the week (as is also evident from the Portuguese names for the week days). However, the fact that, for example, Russian uses the name "second" for Tuesday, indicates that some nations regard Monday as the first day. In international standard ISO-8601 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decreed that Monday shall be the first day of the week. That's why we call Saturday and Sunday "The Weekend" because they are the last two days in the week.

why not say its wednesday? sounds like a good day to me :) it the united states we are conditioned to think it is sunday as most calanders here have sunday first. but i think in spain and mexico they have monday as the first day of the week on calanders (this is the extent of what i remember from spanish class) and judging by how the united states just has to be different from all the other countries (driving on the opposite side of the road, using different system of measurement) i would say most of the world probably says monday.

My answer to the original question is simply "no". There seems to be consensus to the extent only to that the first day of the week is either Saturday, or Sunday, or Monday, but beyond this, there is disagreement. The fraction of the world's population that considers the week to begin on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday is, I believe, zero or infinitesimal.

I was taught sunday as a child. These days payday is the first day of my week. Or life...That's Thursday, and the week is a fortnight.
