Excellent question. the first thing to take note of is that the Old Testament covers a period of several centuries, whereas the New Testament covers less than a hundred years (give or take). The window into God's character in the New Testament is a narrower one. Secondly, the Old Testament explains man's relationship with God under the "Old Covenent" (i.e. Moasic/Levitical law). Under this covenant, God's people continually turned to idols when they should have been turning to God. Because they rebelled as a people, God was dealing with them (wrathfully) as a people. Under the New Covenant (made whole through Jesus' death), the people of Israel were less rebellious -as a people- and God appears to deal with individuals more than the entire nation. This is a general answer, and there are certainly other perspectives. Your question is a god one, and one that minds greater than mine have struggled with. I encourage you to read further.
