Why do people ask "do you work here" when you are standing behind the counter they just walked up to?

Dunno, that seems pretty obvious, but I was in an electronics store a while back and walked up to a group of guys wearing white collared shirts and black pants, thinking they worked there. Turns out they were a group of Mormons. Oops.

maybe it's because you don't make eye contact and say may I help you? Sometimes I get the feeling that I am intruding and have interrupted someone's nap when they avoid making eye contact with me. So to clear up any possible misunderstandings I say, do you work here? and in some cases I also check them for a pulse.

Cuz people are stupid. And then when you go shopping & have your coat on, your purse in your hand, and are pushing around a shopping cart, there's always that jacka** that asks the same question?!? I'm starting to understand why hermits do what they do.
