Here's a few ideas: 1) It could be related to breathing. When we're in great pain, we sob, cry, and sometimes yell. All of that emotion could take a toll on our lungs. 2) It's likely psychologically induced. We know that the mind has great control over the body. People are able to heal themselves - or injure themselves - when in the correct state of mind. If we are in such terrible pain, our brain knows it. We also know the metaphorical "He broke my heart." Our brain just fills in the gap. 3) Depending on your philosophical / religious views, you could also say this is your soul aching. And I believe that this answer has some validity as well. As humans, we long to be connected to other humans. When a relationship with someone ends, it can be very painful, and hurt on a meta-physical level. 4) Any combination of the above. But those are just my ideas.

It's probably anxiety. I have problems like that when I feel strong emotional frustraion. They can give you a prescription for that.

I think that feeling is caused by a release of adrenaline. When we feel pain, the amygdala (a part of the limbic system in our brain), triggers adrenaline into the bloodstream, which is felt when it reaches the heart as a "jolting" sensation, which can be unbearably painful, and the body responds accordingly, depending on whether the circumstance calls for fight or flight.
