When people say that they are not on AB to amass points and climb the ladder to sage or whatever, are they just kidding themselves? Isn't that like saying that you don't play space invaders to get a big score, you just like zapping aliens?

No, AB is not a game. Even though I am a competitive person, I honestly do not care that much about points, levels, whatever. If the number of points a person had actually indicated the intelligence/helpfulness of a user, I'd find it more impressive. As it is, it only indicates more time to kill and/or AB popularity.

I know of ABers who turn off their points. Many have been here a long time and have not amassed a ton of points. And their are many ABers, like myself, who have enjoyed interacting with so many other ABers that even if there were no points, we would still be here.

No, it's not like that at all. I'm at level 28 -- in my current account. I recently abandoned an account at level 58, and before that I abandoned an account at level 45. The level 45 account was "only" at that level because I had the staff reset my points to zero 4 times in the first 5 months of 2007. Normally I operate with the points checkbox turned off so it doesn't clutter up my profile. I know a number of other users who have either tossed away their points intentionally, or abandoned "high level" accounts for various personal reasons. It's clear they're not in it for the points... so the question is "what are they in it for?" For me, the real thrill of AB is good comment threads. I have had so many wonderful conversations with people in comment threads, and made great friends. Comment threads ARE the real game, and anybody who thinks points or levels are at all interesting is being distracted by the glitter and missing the show.

Who cares about points? I just love reading some of the comments and questions....they can be such a hoot! It is interesting though to see some of the 500+ point questions, because most of the time they are not even that big of a deal as far as questions go :o) Still...I love me some AB!

What matters to you is what matters. I give advise and answers on here to try to better the lives of people. Yes, it does swell my ego when people think my way is a good way, but that isn't the main motivation. The points are just numbers on this 1 website. Their only function is to change your rank every once in a while and to tell people how much your answers have helped people or been received positively. The people behind all of these accounts are real and you have a chance to help them out or improve some aspect of life for them. That is what it's all about for me.
