  • I expect 4 categories of games to exist in the future, with some crossover. Casual "timewasters" like solitaire and other games that may be easily accessed and closed without a huge commitment to the game. "Retro" games that use older technology, appeal in part to nostalgia but mostly to older concepts of what "fun" is. They will be focused on figuring out why Tetris is still fun, why Final Fantasy 7 can still make people cry, and why Earthbound has such a cult following. "Utility" games that will be part game, part tool or trainer. They may use aspects of virtual reality, innovative forms of user input, and will be similar in technological scope to the most cutting edge games. "Immersion" games. Let's face it. To those who enjoy WoW, Second Life, The Sims, Gears of War, the goal is clearly total immersion. Some of these games will be as close to real life as possible, some will be stylized and fantastical, but all will be on the cutting edge of technology, they will use some visual display that encompasses the player's entire field of view, and will most likely dispense of keyboards or controllers in favor of something more intutive, like gloves for interacting with the surroundings or a game specific tool, like a sword or gun.
