The earthworm habitat is top soil. The healthier the soil, the more worms will live there. So that severely limits the number world wide. In fact they are so relatively rare, they are a huge commodity. According to Doug Collicut "Nightcrawler", "In 1980, 370 million worms were exported from Canada, with a Canadian export value of $13 million and an American retail value of $54 million." http://www.naturenorth.com/fall/ncrawler/ncrawlF.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm
