Depends. A pet can be a good way to teach a child responsibility. A pet can be comforting. A pet can be ornamental. (Fish come to mind.) If you're getting a dog because it sounds cool and leave it the back yard alone or chained to a post for its entire life, then I think that's a waste and pretty sad. If you don't really want a pet, then it's not worth it to get one, but I personally will be looking to get a pet once I'm in a stable environment. (Definitely a cat... and maybe some fish.)
