It is, in fact, a felony crime in the US.

Major felony! Some people have had their whole lives ruined by identity theft. It is impossible to stop too and leads to a mess of things to take care of. Definitely a major felony

Major felony. It can be far, far more harmful than, say, burglary (a felony).

I had my identity stolen. I was in the process of moving and buying a new car before I found out. They got 2 cell phones, home phone, internet and cable thru AT&T, a credit card and electric service at their home. Can you believe that the cops still wouldn't do anything except knock on their door?! When the people didn't answer the cop asked for a warrant from the judge but he denied it! So here I am watching every detail on my credit not knowing what they will do next. I was already working on rebuilding my credit after a few small mistakes, but this plunged me into the "DENIED" category. And its impossible to get everything removed. Its been a year and things still show up on my credit report. DEFINITELY A FELONY, I HAVE CRIED MANY TIMES OVER IT. THOSE WHO STEAL IDENTITIES HAVE NO PLACE IN SOCIETY AND SHOULD BE SENTENCED TO LIFE, REALLY. BECAUSE THEY STEAL LIVES.

It should depend on what you do with the stolen identity...

The pain and suffering it causes makes it a major felony. We'd recover much more quickly and better from broken bones.

Major felony without a doubt. Im dealing with this as we speak and truthfully, in the end, the person who had their identity stolen gets screwed either way. Im gonna end up paying all these bills and as it is im struggling to pay the ones I did create, never mind the ones i knew nothing about!

major felony - creates major havoc and financial ruin for victims. Extortion is one event, one hit. Identity theft keeps right on hitting, often for years.
