Well it depends. Dating, is when you go out with someone and communicate with them on a regular basis. Also, you have agreed to date. An exclusive relationship is when you agree not to date other people.

I have two different ideas of dates. One is usually geared toward physical intimacy of some sort at some time, and the other is more innocent.

Spending time with someone in whom you have a potentially romantic interest doing mutually agreeable things..it may lead to friendship, it may lead to more than that, or it may simply fade away. If you go out to just "hook up", I don't consider that dating.

Dating is the beginning of a relationship before a committment is made. It is time spent going to together, doing things, to find out if you are compatible and if you get along with each other. Dating should last quite some time before a committment is made. You are also free to date other people you want until a committment is made.
