To make the consumer think they are getting a better deal than what they really are so they will purchase the product anyway. Other than that....nothing....For all of the rebaits I have sent in...it has cost me more in time, effort, and stamps than I have ever received in anything back!

It's by and large a scam, as most companies in the US who use this tactic, rely on the majority of consumers not mailing in their rebate claim.

The hope that you forget until after the deadline and hence coerced a full-price sale out of you. There is probably a 50% or higher rate of negligence for mailing those damn things in.
