I would just go buy another one. Once it starts to rust, i don;t think that it will stop. Once Oxygen gets into the kettle, they are pretty herd to get rid of. If you don;t want to buy a new one, then try to scrape off the rust, if you can.

I think I would get a new one at this point. If you are not afraid of 'used' items, go to a thrift shop or on Ebay and buy a nice glass Pyrex teapot. That's what I use, and it never rusts or gets funky. It is clear, so you can see what's going on inside of it, in your water, at all times. It's also incredibly easy to wash in the sink or a dishwasher. The negative of this is... no whistle. They also sell an inexpensive line of 'colored' teapots at Target stores that have some kind of non-stick surface inside that is resistant to rust and other buildup.
