It's overrated.

Trust me one realizes what a father is in true terms when he lose a father. My father passed away around 4 months back, and now i realize what a father is. Father is one because of whom you feel secure(secure as in its every possible meaning)... I never worried before if i hit my car somewhere what will i do, never worried about some group fight(which i frequently used get myself involved in) or going to a jail. now without him everything hits hard.

Some people who have fathers wish they never did or feel they never knew them. For me, having a father was like having a sort of god there to protect me and adore me and make me feel as if the world wasn't so frightening as I thought. But that was when I was little. When he died when I was 27 I felt very samll indeed and very scared. I then had to go through a bad period until I finally realized he was just an ordinary, not very powerful even, man. I loved him, he loved me, he had many flaws as a father and as a husband to my mother. Everyone's experience is different. Your life has given you this sad lack so you'll always feel there's something missing. If you are a man you may need to look elsewhre for a male role model, someone you admire and trust(ed?) perhaps. If a female, then be careful not to idealize every man you meet thinking it's 'daddy'. Be strong, find yourself and love yourself.

There is no set way as for what it's "Like to have a father". Each man is different. you could get a million replies to this question and get a million differant views. I think the fact that you grew up without a father isn't ideal for you - but you should look at what you DO have in your life, mother, sister, brother, partner, children, friends etc. i dont know why you grew up without a father, i.e whether he passed away or left, but if your father left, i can pretty much tell you that if he left, you are better of without a father like that. if he passed away, then i am sure he is looking down with pride at you for what you've achieved in your life.
