42 monarchs (including William the Conqueror). The 5 Normans, 8 Angevins, 3 Lancastrians, 3 Yorkists, 6 Tudors, 6 Stuarts, 6 Hanoverians & 5 Windsors. However there was a period after Charles I's execution in 1649 that there were no monarchs, Oliver Cromwell served as Lord Protector and held monarchial powers until his son, Richard, succeeded him in 1658. Then Charles II was crowned in 1660, restoring the monarch.
