My neurologist started me on Keppra 500mg with 1600mg of Tegretol nearly two weeks ago. The first week on was terrible. I could barely function. I kept falling over. I couln't think properly. My speech was all slurry. Lot's of other psychological side effects occured. Only after seeing my neurologist and he reducing the tegretol level to 1000mg did the keppra's side effects start to slightly ease. Only after being on it for nearly two weeks are the side effects starting to decrease. My neurologist said it usually takes about a week before the side effects wear off. For me it took much longer than that. But on the positive side my seizures have now completely stopped. Not to mention the good thing about keppra is the side effects are only temporary. They are not supposed to continue in the long term. I'm really hoping keppra will work for me and I can ditch tegretol. The drug that I have been taking for the last eighteen years. It worked well for 15 of those years. Now it does nothing but make me tired. Keppra in Australia is supposed to be the epilepsy wonder drug. Well it better be because I have tried everything else and they don't work. I really hope keppra will work/has worked for your sister in law.

My brother was recently put on Keppra, after 8 weeks we were still noticing the side effects, 3 weeks ago he had 3 seizures in 1 day, it's left him with short term memory loss, he is only 29 & now has to live with my parents, he doen't like being left alone. Only since this has happened have we heard how bad Keppra side effects actually are!

yeah I have been on Keppra for 18 months now, having had to brain tumours removed and 6 weeks radiotherapy I then had 6 seizures in a week, then they increased my dosage from 1250MG twice daily to 1500MG morning and then 1250MG evening which is pretty close to the max dosage, I have now been on this dosage fro 9 mths and have gone seizure free for this period another 2 months and I'll get my driving licence back! the side effects are bad though! tiredness, lack of appetite, dizziness, when I'm tired I lose my balance very easily.

I don't know about humans, but my cat started having seizures in January. I drove him to Texas A&M Vet School Small Animal Hospital and he had 60 seizures in the car! Keppra stopped the seizures. After anesthesia during a MRI, he started seizing again and the Keppra saved him again. Because of the expense, he was weaned off the Keppra onto Phenybarb and he is recovered now...from being totally blind and paralyzed. Keppra was his "miracle drug" when the phenybarb did not stop the seizures. He takes his medicine every 12 hours; other than that, he is a very lucky, spoiled pet. They told me that Keppra was promising to be a great drug for humans, too. Good Luck!
