Help answer this question below.
Have you been checked for any seizure-like activity by a neurologist? I hope you are feeling well! :)
Because of the date on this question, I am assuming you're fine now?
If not, it could definitely be seizure activity. Get an EEG done.
Many things. One thing that is easy to check, are you around some kind of fan in your car or home or somewhere that is hitting a draft on that area? This is just one quick easy thought. It could be lots of things. But a draft will cause this.
Some medications, specifically anti-depressants and most commonly Celexa, have 'twitching' as a side-affect...and it can get pretty bad so you may want to try another.
If you aren't on anti-depressants, and it feels almost like 'static' in your brain--then you have the same problem I do and have yet to figure out.
That's called a "hypnic jerk" and they're completely normal. I enjoy the sensation.

anxiety is the culprit for me,I haven't been able to sleep well for the last few months, anxiety does this in my system, makes my mind spike in activity, like the jolt you describe, might just be that..IDK
Recommendation, go see your family doctor.
no idea but i " twitch " as i go to sleep wakes me up and sometimes my wife! maybe from cognitive damage from drug use for me at least! I punch in my sleep and drop elbows. DAMN I AM SORRY WIFEY !!!!
Does the warm glow of the television put you to sleep at night because you need the sound to block out your failures?

You're reading Often while on the verge of sleep, I get these very uncomfortable jolts in my head, or brain, which completely wake me up. Like some kind of spaz, hard to describe. What could that be?

I haven't. Maybe I should?

Yes, it's worth the investigation anyway. I am not a doctor, just someone making an observation. Seizures can be quite subtle and barely perceptible to an observer. :)
