Edit: Or make this great soup at home: Split Pea Soup fro North Africa 1 cup dried split peas 3 cups water 2 cups chopped onion 2 large minced cloves garlic 1/4 cup olive oil 2 bay leaves 1 tsp. ground cumin seeds 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1.4 tsp. cayenne 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom 2 cups vegetable stock or water 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup cooked rice salt and pepper top taste 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional) Rinse the split peas. Put them in a soup pot with the 3 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes until tender. In the meantime, sauté the onions and garlic in the oil until onions are translucent. Add the spices and sauté for 5-10 minutes more, stirring often to keep them from burning. Set aside. When the split peas are cooked, stir in the onions and add the stock. Add the lemon juice and rice, salt and pepper. Reheat very gently. Toss in the parsley if wanted at the last minute.
