Help answer this question below.
Each individual decides this question based on many different criteria.
Our family usually is the first to determine whether or not we embrace a religion.
The culture into which we were born is another determining factor.
If we are the type of person who is dissatisfied with what we've been offered, we begin to search for our own answers.
Useful: Because we keep in our comfort zone and have a sense of belonging.
Useless: Because relying on a "babysitter in the sky" to make our life decisions is absurd.
It's USEFUL in that it may help you feel certain feelings (i.e. I'll meet my deceased mother once again / My mother's murderer will burn in hell / I will be rewarded with eternal paradise, rather than ending my life with absolutely no prospects)
It's USELESS in that it doesn't help you know any real knowledge.
Unfortunately, for many people comfort outranks knowledge. They willingly place a higher priority on being able to feel certain things, than on actually knowing certain things.
But hey, if ignorance is bliss; purposeful delusion must be like superbliss!
I actually envy them, sometimes.
Useful or useless for what, is the question.
For many people embracing a religion is useful for developing ties to the community, being handed a code of morals and ethics without having to go to the trouble of figuring it out for yourself, and emotional support.
On the other hand, my personal experience is that embracing a religion tends to get in the way of one's spirituality.
