Its finished- the purpose for which he came to earth, the aim for his death, to defeat satan and take victory over death...And the step towards that is finished.The only thing left now is a seal in confirming that victory by breathing out for the last time.

I believe he always knew his purpose was to die on the cross which would end his time on earth. He fulfilled his purpose and said it is finished.

His sacrifice for sins was completed- and completion is also in the idea of the Greek verb used there (really hard to translate completely into English!). He no longer had to suffer- all the sins of the world had been paid for by his sufferings. Now, all that remained was the confirmation of his sacrifice on Easter morning!

i always thought it meant all the earthly pain and agony he went through was over..he was finished with his job on earth for his father.

All his suffering and sin and shame that he took on for man here on earth was finished.

When Jesus said it is finished, not only was He referring to the end of His ministry but to the end of His physical life that he had to give as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. The next step was His Resurrection to assure eternal life to all who choose Him as Savior and to announce to the world that He had conquered death and the grave.
