  • All food must go through the X-ray machine. Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unwrapped. Food must be wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay, but half-eaten fruits must be wrapped. Answer taken from here - http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1667.shtm
  • We often take homemade sandies, along with bagged chips and fruit in our carry on bags. Haven't had any problem with getting through security, but are probably beginning to glow from the inside out after the x-ray screening.
  • Just as long as your food is not in "liquid" or "gel" form (yogurt, pudding, soup at hand, etc). A lot of it is also based on TSA agent discretion. By that I mean, if the TSA guy is having a bad day, he might say your sandwich with a bit of mayo is a "gel". Generally, it isn't a big deal. Your food does have to go through the X-ray though, so make sure it's in a wrapper, for sanitation sake.
