The answer above is correct, but I thought I'd expand on it a little... Bowling shoes do allow you to slide on the wooden lanes. This is neccessary because of the forward momentum you have when making your approach. If you were to wear rubber-soled shoes, which tend to stick on wooden surfaces, you would probably fall over forward as you threw the ball...trust me, I have tried it. Because bowling shoes slide on the wood, it allows your entire body to keep moving forward, transferring your momentum to the ball while allowing you to stay upright and stable. Hope this helps...

Actually, the advantage of sliding is so you don't fall and you can have a clean shot. If you "stick", or fail to slide on the approach, you will most likely have a bad shot. The shoes help you to stay balanced, also, when you release the ball.
