Based on my own experience, it usually takes longer with Yahoo. If your site is legit, has useful info, and is following general search engine optimization principles (lots of info on this topic on the web) your site will get crawled by Yahoo and you will be ranked well. You also have the option (read about this on the Yahoo site) of paying Yahoo a one-time fee for a faster review of your website, with no guarantee however. A good site I used when I started my site was http://selfpromotion.com/ Lots of good info there and good answers to your question.

There are many ways. There are companies out there who only do SEO (Search Engine Optimization). How many sites link to you? One way versus a two way link. How is your site organized? Do you have a lot of internal linking (pages within your site linking to other pages within your site). Those are just a few things to consider.
