I have a friend with a MB 300D turbo diesel that upon starting spews out a horrible cloud of black smoke. He asked me why, but I'm not to familiar diesels (gas yes). What are the possible causes and/or solutions? Thanks

The classic black cloud... It is caused by incomplete combustion, usually under heavy loads. depending on the age of the engine it may just be wear and tear. Since fuel has a chance to accumulate during starting, it can be drastic if compression is starting to decrease in the engine. Failing to wait for glow plugs to heat the chamber can cause this as well. -
