It wasn't an onion, it was a leek. He is the Prince of Wales, St David is the patron saint of Wales and it was St David's Day. The significance of the leak is that, along with the daffodil, it is symbolic of Wales. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_David's_Day
