  • The structure you are talking about is basically front end web servers that do nothing but cache and feed content out to clients, second tier is middleware servers that cache and process requests between the web servers, and tier three is the actual data base servers that feed data to the middle tier requests. There have been several different names for it. I think MS called it ISA, Compaq had a name for it, in the dot bomb hey-day, everyone had their own name for the same design.
