I have owned (and destroyed) quite a few of these multifunction printers. They all suffer from the severe competition for low price: i.e. trying to pack so many features into such an inexpensive package tends to affect quality, and you should be aware that the real way these companies make money is by selling you the ink cartridges at inflated prices, and changing the design of the cartridges regularly to prevent 3rd party vendors from horning in on that lucrative market. Having said all that, my own experience is that Canon is about as reliable and stable as they come in this arena -- not to say they're perfect, but they seem to last longer than the other brands I've bought. HP lands at the bottom of my personal-experience list, Epson is about in the middle. Currently I have a Canon MX-310, which is about $200 and has a document feeder for the copier, fax, color printer, scanner, etc. It does everything but wash the dishes, that was an optional accessory. :)
