there are so many greats out there so it really depends on what a person likes to hear. I would say my favorite is diane warren, she is not a music star but she writes for almost everyone .....celine dion, heart, aerosmith, southgang, cher, toni braxton and so on and so on. She actually wrote aerosmiths only number one hit.

Stevie Wonder is my personal choice. Leonard Cohen has to be up there. And I agree with Cat Stevens. What about the rap scene? You might not appreciate the "music" but the lyrics are amazing...Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop and Slim Shady have to rate. You've probably never heard of this guy, but Neil Finn is probably one of the best songwriters of his generation (Gen-X).

IMO, with the perspective of the last 50 years, confining it to a broadly defined popular music I would have to give it to Bob Dylan. He would have to give a lot of credit to Woody Guthrie. But most following him would have to give credit to him. Other contenders would be John Lennon and Paul Simon; many others are close to that group. I think mention should be made of Sondheim who would credit the likes of Rodger and Hammerstein. Here Dylan singing 'Simple Twist of Fate' 1975, better than anyone IMO.
