they are different codecs for encoding audio. different ones can have higher bitrates(takes more space) than others. I use AIFF for highdefinition audio with my SGI's. For ipods AAC is better, lossless is good too. It all depends on the quality of the original file, If with a ipod I recommend AAC. AIFF runs better under UNIX-V systems in my opinion, and lossless (while one of the best qualities) can take up alot of space.
