I get paranoid at that, and when it pops up that they're online, and when you open a chat, they've mysteriously gone offline...

Not at all. I'm so guilty of that. I have three friends that IM me within seconds of logging on. I actually have them in my Yakkity Yak group. If I'm not in the mood to IM back and forth for an hour and I see they are online I instantly sign off. I'm so terrible.
