The major differences that come to my mind immediately are:
-- Firefox has tabbed browsing; IE just opens new windows
    -- Firefox has built-in pop-up blocking.

Also, since IE comes automatically with most Windows installations, and because most people lack the [inclination/expertise] to switch to a non-IE browser, ~95% of PC users use IE. So whenever someone wants to write malicious code (spyware, virus, etc...), they will write it for the widest installed base.

As a result, many bad things that happen on the 'net don't affect PCs browsing with Firefox. Most crackers usually find it not worth the hassle to find hidden flaws in 5% of PCs when you can easilly exploit the many publicly-known security holes in 95% of PCs.

Relsqui : You are correct: I did leave out a lot. Would you care to elaborate beyond my answer, or merely post comments? You seem to have a longer list than I do, and thus may be able to answer better than I.
As for Firefox being free, you are also correct. However, IE is also free, and it installs automatically with Windows. IE usually comes pre-installed from the factory!
The AVERAGE person will just use whatever is easiest and least labor/brain-intensive. Double-clicking the IE icon Windows automatically puts on your desktop is a lot quicker and easier than bothering to learn about browsers (not everyone online is computer-savvy), obtaining, installing, and configuring Firefox, especially if you already feel you have an adequate web browser .

    1) The most important difference is the market share:
    "Usage share for Q4 2008
    Internet Explorer: 70.72%
    Firefox: 20.27%
    Safari: 6.77%
    Opera: 0.73%
    Netscape: 0.48%
    Chrome: 0.78%
    Other: 0.24%"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers

    2) IE is proprietary, whereas Firefox is open source:
"After the defeat of Netscape by Internet Explorer, Netscape open-sourced their browser code, which led to the formation of the Mozilla Foundation—a primarily community-driven project to create a successor to Netscape. Development continued for several years with little widespread adoption until a stripped-down browser-only version of the full suite was created, featuring new ideas such as tabbed browsing and a separate search bar. The browser-only version was initially named Phoenix, but because of trademark issues that name was changed, first to Firebird, then to Firefox. "
    Source and further information:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_wars

    3) Internet Explorer and Firefox are not web browsers, they are both series of web browsers.
The last version of Internet Explorer is IE7, with IE8 in development, but many people or companies are still using IE6 or even IE5.
The last version of Firefox is Firefox 3, but some people are still using Firefox 2.

Firefox 2 introduced tabbed browsing, which IE6 had not at that time. But IE7 has also tabbed browsing.

The last version of IE can now only be installed on Windows, but Firefox can also be installed on other operating systems.

A detailed description of features differences can be found here:
