In 1808 the mother of a skilled sea captain sat in her lonely kitchen making a olykoeks (directly translated to oily cake in dutch.) As she perfected her creation to impress the friends of her high class New England circle she came across a secret ingredient...GROUND NUTMEG. She also discovered that hazelnuts and walnuts added the perfect tang to her concoction. Hence, the doughnut.
