  • Just ask the fool who's grading your papers what kind of dictionary he/she is reading from.
  • No. The primary language of the US is English so I would certainly consider the true English spelling to be muy acceptable.
  • Well you are spelling in the French way, not the American version of spelling. But I dont think your score should have been less, unless they specified that you write it in english, or you are in English class.
  • I think that it's stupid that you spell like that. We are in America, use our spellings. Maybe you should move to England
  • When in Rome..... I'm sorry to say that when you are in a certain country and you are being schooled and taught a certain way, it is up to you to spell things correctly according to the standards there. It would be just like if you spoke slang or a foreign language and wrote your paper in those languages. They would be right to mark you down for not doing the work as required.
  • I don't think they should be marked down, and who ever does the scoring should go by the dictionary which does include those spellings.
  • I wouldn't think so.
  • No. American instructors shouldn't mark your essays down because you spell correctly whilst they don't...
  • Actually, I'm American also, but I also spell like a Brit (and the rest of the world for that matter). But, alas, no, none of my papers have ever gotten less marks than they should have based on an alternative spelling of a word.
  • I don't think so. I (an American) prefer British spellings for many words, also. They just look more correct to my eye. I do reserve "theatre" for live stage performances, though. If I mean a cinema, I spell it "theater." I'm not sure where I picked that quirk up.
  • I'm British, but i spell like the American, i dont know why. But i dont see why, our essay's have to be wrong, My teacher will be like thats not how you spell color etc. its wrong, its american, blah blah blah i say, i dnt see why it matters because if they know that there is two way to spell it why the fuck care, its bullocks!
  • It would all depend on who is doing the marking! The teacher has the final say. If she/he wants you to write gra for gray then you do what she/he wants. Case closed!
