Sometimes we can label people and miss what's really going on. I'd need to know more about the 'traits' you've noticed before I could get deeper on this. But, the feeling your friend describes could just be depression? Lack or loss of interest in the world/normal pastimes etc., is a symptom of depression. When someone feels empty they usually feel really alienated and separate from everyone else. They have no sense of personal identity adn don't know who they are. This could be because they have over-adapted to others' expectations too much - people in authority/parents - and have 'lost' themselves. That might result in a feeling of emptiness.

Thanks for your answer, but her counselor diagnosed her about two years ago with borderline traits, not full-fledged bpd, and not simply depression. She manifests many of the other symptoms, such as splitting, severe mood swings, impulsivity, a hair-trigger temper (exc. she holds it in mostly, and withdraws), paranoia, at times detaching from reality, and extreme fear of being alone for long periods of time. She feels depressed and completely out of touch with the world when she is alone. She can't relate to feeling empty because she is, thankfully, very creative and is on a spiritual path. She says she feels like Alice in Wonderland--very much alive but fluid and not truly seen by other people. She often complains of disappearing when she is not engaged in teaching or the arts.
