  • Depends what took its place. If it was a genuine belief in a "brotherhood of man" or whatever the non sexist equivalent of that would be.... then Hell yeah!
  • I'm not sure if this necessarily answers the question but I think people that say that "religion causes wars" are wrong. Religions don't start wars, idiots do. Example.... Three of my best friends in the world and I are all different religions. I won't say names or which is which but one is a Muslim, one is an Atheist, one is a Theist who had a Jewish upbringing and converted, and one is a Scientologist who had a Christian upbringing and converted. All of us are aware of the other three's religious ideals/backgrounds and yet we respect one another. And while we did explain our ideals to one another, we refrain from forcing it upon each other. If everyone had this kind of respect for other's religious ideals we would not have these kinds of wars. Which goes back to my previous statement; Religions don't start wars, idiots do.
  • The lyrics of that John Lennon song "Imagine!" comes into mind when I looked at your question...
  • yeah i think so
  • YES!! the entire world would thrive without religion interfeiring with RATIONAL thought
  • Most definitely, I think it would be the biggest help to humanity I can think of. I just hope I'm alive when it happens but I know that won't happen fuggers still got a death grip on a lot of poor souls lol
  • He was making the point of eliminating our differences
  • That is such a complex answer for me. I would say, ultimately "no". Some people need those rules to keep themselves in check. At the same time, some people take said rules to the extreme. It's not religion that I think is bad, but the extremists (on ANY side) that bother me. So, I guess the answer to your question is: No, I don't think it would be a better place without it, because it is in human nature to take things to the extreme. So imagine a world without people who believe in being "good", and "decent" to others. **Now, That said, I don't believe that those without religion don't believe in being "good" or "decent" to others; I'm an agnostic/borderline athiest myself. BUT, some people need the rules and religion to keep themselves in check. And really, if it keeps them on a path of behaving, I'm all for it. Just don't take it to the extreme. Let the warpath begin!! :)
  • Groups have extremes. Statistically speaking, this will happen. It just so happens that almost every religious doctrine has some kind of "we don't like other religions" involved. Which, when interpreted by extremes of the groups, is seen as "we hate other religions". The question was "do you think the world would be a better place without it?". My knee-jerk reaction is to say 'yes'. However, I can give no definitive answer because there are some religions which I support.
  • Religion is a symptom, not a disease. Ideology happily replaces religion sometimes (e.g., Stalinism, Ayn Rand).
  • Of course, but without this dilemma. Because, religion gives us hope, thats true that some nations who threw away belief, seems if they are in better shape but that is just a mirage. The dilemma of no religion might seems good to some but it would not change the reality of presence of God.
