  • I play on fulltilt, I used to play on pokerstars. I learned to do the poker odds in my head in a snap, it's not too difficult once you get the hang of it. First I figure out an idea of what cards he's holding. I avoid situations in which I might be drawing dead, i.e.: Could he already have a fullhouse, did he flop the ace high flush, etc. Second I figure out how many cards in the deck could help me make my hand. Say, I need another heart to make my flush. I'm holding 2, there's 2 on board, (this is texas hold em I'm talking about here,) there are 13 total. 13-4=9. I have 9 outs. With 52 cards total, each card has roughly a 2% chance of flipping over, so my odds of making my flush ON the turn is 18%, and making it on the river would be 18% also. Then I compare that to what's called the Pot Odds. At 18%, I'm about a 4:1 underdog, OR a 3:1 if I stay till the river. I'll make this flush about 1 out of 4.5 times. So, in order to continue, the pot has to be the right size (about 4.5 times the bet). But THEN, there are IMPLIED ODDS. That means, "How much MORE could I win off him AFTER I make the flush (or straight or whatever)?" There will be more betting after the river. Will it be obvious I made the flush? Will he bet again or call a big bet? If I think he might have a straight, I'll definitely stay on a flush draw longer, because I know he'll have a very difficult time folding to a reraise. I'll likely get paid in a big way.
