A first day cover is an envelope with stamps on it that were cancelled in the city where the stamp was issued on the day it was issued. For instance if the Elvis stamp were issued in Memphis TN on August 13, 1994 (not sure if this was the correct date) then a first day cover would be an envelope with an Elvis stamp, postmarked August 13, 1994 in Memphis TN. Often they are on "cachets" which is the same thing, but the envelope is decorated to go with the stamp, like a picture of Elvis. Typically these are mailed to you in another envelope so that it does not get messed up getting to you.
