  • The short answer is: no -- about the only physical damage a virus could do to a computer is if it caused the hard drive to spin continuously until it wore out.
  • No, not that I'm aware of. Virus is a program, if you were to completely wipe your hard drive, and install fresh, your computer would be good as new. I suppose if the virus told your fan to stop working your chip could overheat, but I'm not sure your software can do that... or can it?
  • Ouch, stop yelling please. There are currently no known viruses that negatively impact any current hardware. A long time ago, a virus was written to kill the old hard drives by making the heads go from one extreme of the platters to another (over and over) but that no longer works. There was also a virus that could damage older monitors by making the video card send certain signals. Until motherboard-based virtualization chips (coming soon) are implemented, I don't see a way a virus could impact a motherboard.
  • I've never heard of a virus attacking the main board. There are viruses that can make CPUs peg, old HDs thrash, and cause memory leaks. These will effect your performance but not harm the main board. I have been able to remotely burn out network card's chipsets, but not with a virus.
