I think any crime against another human being or animal is a CRIME and it's bad.

I feel the same about the elderly and children because they are vulnerable.

Could it be because children are supposed to represent all that we expect in respect to innocence?

Any crime against defenseless people is abominable. Because children are innocent, can't defend themselves, and the crime perpetrated could scar them for life, it is almost always unforgivable, in my eyes.

Because children are the epitome of innocence. They have done no harm to anyone, so when harm comes to them it's heartbreaking. And yes, I agree--any crime is crime.

Is it bad for me to admit that sometimes crimes against animals upset me more than crimes against children? :-/
