  • They lead sections, like the trumpets, drums, etc.. if you play in a marching band and play, say, a tuba, you would have a section leader for tubas.
  • They keep their section in order and teach them marching and playing techniques. A lot of it requires getting the respect of the people in the section or else they won't take advice and orders seriously. Pushovers make the worst section leaders. Since they are your peers you shouldn't always be controlling them. It is really important to have an equal relationship with the members so they know you have good intentions. But you gotta take command when the band and music starts. It's kind of like being a babysitter, a teacher and a leader. Right, and patience.
  • Also, sometimes with big enough bands the section leader is like a liaison between the director and the different sections. It would take way to much time for the director to explain to each section what he wants them to do, but it takes a lot less time for him to explain to the section leader who than explains to the section. The section leader also gives individual attention to members of his section, find their short failing and helps them improve the areas that they need to. Suffice it to say, a bad section leader will be someone who forms a group of the best of the section around himself and refuses to give assistance to those of less talent below him.
