  • The straight-arm salute was used in the US before World War II, but it was never widely used.
  • Well, America and Germany were pretty 'tight' until 1942...3 years into WWII. When Hitler visited NYC and recieved the key to the city it was reported that America and Germany, two great allies, would stand side by side and rid their nations of the parasitic elements which plagued their nations...I wont put quotations around that as it's not word for word but the main, most striking, words were used. See, America and Germany were in the depression together which is what formed this bond. The sad truth of this is that from 1939-42 the U.S.A should have atleast placed an embargo on Nazi Germany due to the violence and imminent threat they posed, let alone the fact their allies were fighting them but trade continued, as it aided the U.S.A. It has been said that if Nazi Germany was a war machine then America was the oil. Also, it struck British engineers with horror that when they captured German vehicles they discovered some of the engines were American! I could possibly delve a little deeper but this should serve suffice as a brief on the context of America and Nazi Germany. To simply sum up - "you were buds".
