My dog's anus looks red and has mucus on it. I told the vet so she checked it but didn't think it was anything serious. This was two weeks ago and it is still the same. Is this normal?

What happens with some dogs is that their anal gland gets impacted and when they poop, they don't totally empty. What the vet or vet tech does is wear a latex glove and put his fingers in the dog's tush in a certain spot, to clear the blockage. It only takes a few minutes to do. Someone is holding the pooch down and it may be uncomfortable for the dog but he'll feel a lot better after.

This is important to do when the dog is dragging his butt on the ground.

Forgot to mention that if this is the case its a simple procedure that only takes a few moments. Our groomer actually does it for our dog every 6 weeks.

Is he rubbing his bum on the floor/ground? It could be that his anal glands are filled full of fluid and are leaking. This is very uncomfortable for the dog so he would be licking and scratching. By the time we got our gog into the vet his anus was bleeding from him scratching.

No. Good grief, take him to another vet. I hope you've had him isolated or outside.
