Really good question. I do not like to take drugs for many reasons. I won't even take asprin. Personal and health reasons. I've taken some anti depressants and for some reason they make me feel like I'm going to lose lunch. So I have refused to take medications a few times. Any time a doc gives me meds, I always read the warnings and the sheet of potential problems. I'm also bad with pain killers. They tend to just knock me out. I've had serious pain killers after surgery that I would not take because I'd rather be functional and deal with pain.

yes, as a matter of fact I do!. However I would only refuse to take the medication if the side affects were worse that the actual thing I was trying to cure

Yes I do. Kinda depends who prescribes it - If it's my endochronolgist who prescribed it for me, he knows the meds I'm taking, and my belief is he knows how to combine the after-effects. (He's REALLY good!) If it's someone else, I ask specifically if it will cause problems with my other meds. I also ask the pharmacist. They will usually tell me if there's anything I need to watch out for. If it's hospital, I TAKE a list of my meds, dosages, when I take them, what for, and who prescribed them and HAND them to the admitting nurse, rather than trying to write them all on the admissions form. Therefore the hosptial nurses AND pharmacist SHOULD know what I'm taking and any new meds prescribed and anything that should have an adverse effect. (My list also includes non-meds - Vitamins, aspirin, etc. I take regularly, and any temporary meds I'm taking at the time I see the doctor/enter the hosptial.)

Yes, I like to know what I could be experiencing. Have you ever listened to the commercials about prescription drugs? Sometimes the side effects are WAY more drastic than the reason you're even taking the drug! "For the sniffles, take "miracle drug"! Side effects may include: anal leakage, seizures, brain tumors, cancer of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, pancreas, brain, liver, esophagus, kidneys and bladder. May cause loss of bladder control and incontinence. May cause fevers of up to 120 degrees farenheit (sp?) and constant vomiting, migraines, and explosive diarrhea." Um, I'd rather have the sniffles, thanks. (Obviously this came completely from my head, but sometimes it sounds that way!)

Actually, when I'm prescribed something I ask the doctor before he even hands me the prescription what it is and what are the effects. Always know the side-effects of any medication. You never know.
-
I would always read the side effects of a new medication that is prescribed to me and no, I would not refuse to take them. The only time I may not want to take them is if the side effects were adverse and severe side effects, and not if they were temporary side effects. Be sure to know the difference.

I do read about the side effects. I have stopped taking medications before that had side effects I didn't like.
-
I first discuss with my MD what the side effects and benefits are. I have also asked if they get a kick back from the manufacture.
-
Yes, I research the side effects. I had a friend that was a medical transcriber and she had all these books that catalogs every drug on the planet. I would tell her what it was and she would let me know the info. Once when I told her, she hurriedly called back and said don't take it!!! One of the side effects of it, combined with another problem I was having was.....death!.... yeah, nice side effect. My doctor hadn't even caught that! Neither had the pharmacist. SO it is up to use to make sure that what we are taking is okay for us and we have the right to refuse and ask for some alternative to dangerous drugs. That's why I quit the drug route and I've gone to all alternative medicine and have been much happier and healthier.

i read the side effects any time i take anything. fortunately, i'm one of those people who doesn't often experience side effects, but i like to know anyways. for example, if i'm taking something that might cause drowsiness, i take it at night. etc.
-
i refuse to take the medicine that my doctor want me to take because they take away my feelings and when i take them i cant remember things or think or do anything projects and keeping with them im taking lithium, walputran ,and to other ones...grr i hate medicine

I take ALOT of meds on a daily basis...Yes I ALWAYS read the side effects and also do internet searches for info on a new med..and YES I have refused to take a new med because of the side effects. There may be a diff med they can give you with not so many neg effects or etc.

I always do.You never know the side effects.
-
Yes to both - sometimes the side-effects are worse than the reason for the medication. - "Some side effects may include Death". - Cheery! :p
