  • It wasn't really the apple that did it, it was the act of disobedience. God gave them only one rule... don't eat from this certain tree. They had plenty of other trees, freedom, and an opportunity to make their choice to obey him. Without the option to make a choice, they would not be operating under free will as there would be no other option. The tree gave them the opportunity to exercise a choice, a chance to serve God and show their love by obedience. It wasn't the apple that did Eve and Adam in, it was what it stood for. Did God set them up to fail by putting the tree there? No. He set them up to have free will and have a chance to show their desire (and a very easy to follow rule) to obey him because it was the right thing to do, not because they had no other choice. Adam is also guilty because he knew what his wife did, knew it was wrong, and chose to be with her, share in her sin, and chose her over God... and disobeyed willfully also.
  • In legal circles, it's commonly known as "entrapment"...
  • It's symbolic. It was the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Until Eve ate the fruit, they did not comprehend evil. Eve disobeyed, talked Adam into it and they both became "aware" of evil which got them banished from Eden or "paradise".
